Hops Weekly: You can’t win them all, but the Hops sure tried in Everett

A good start to the season got even better this past week in Everett, as the Hops won their first five games against the AquaSox before having their seven-game win streak snapped with an 8-4 defeat in the series finale Sunday night.

As a team, Hillsboro batted .288 over the course of the week, led by Cristofer Torin (.500), Druw Jones (.429), Ben McLaughlin (.417) and Ryan Waldschmidt (.368) who combined to go 32-for-75 with four home runs and 24 RBI.

On the mound, the Hops got quality starts from Daniel Eagen, Mason Marriott and John West who combined to allow four earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out 26 and walking just four in 13.1 innings pitched.

Hillsboro finished the week sitting at 7-2 and atop the Northwest League standings, and return home this week for six games with visiting Spokane.

Below is a summary of last week’s games, along with news and notes from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

April 8: Hillsboro 7, Everett 6

We may have to start calling them the “Cardiac Kids” because for the second consecutive game the Hops came from behind, this time to the tune of a 7-6 win over the AquaSox in the first game of a six game series on Tuesday in Everett.

Ben McLaughlin hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to cap a five-run seventh, erasing a four-run deficit.

McLaughlin finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and was one of four Hillsboro hitters, including Druw Jones, Jansel Luis and Ryan Waldschmidt, with multiple hits.

The Sox roughed-up Hops starter Daniel Nunez, scoring two runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings.

Everett starter Nick Payero pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

Hillsboro scored their first two runs in the top of the fourth on a Luis two-run home run.

Hops relievers Liam Norris, Hayden Durke, Philip Abner and Luke Craig were dominant in relief, combining to allow just a single hit while striking out 10 in 4.2 shutout innings to close out the game.

April 9: Hillsboro 13, Everett 6

Despite a wonky day on the mound, Hillsboro extended their winning streak to four with a 13-6 win over Everett on Wednesday.

Hops pitchers issued 11 base-on-balls and three hit-batsmen in the game, but made up for such with 12 hits, including two home runs.

Druw Jones led Hillsboro with four hits in the game, finishing 4-for-6 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored.

Ryan Waldschmidt and Jackson Feltner both homered for the Hops, with Waldschmidt tallying a team-high five RBI.

Hillsboro scored one run in the first inning, four in the third, four more in the fourth, a single run in the fifth, then capped their scoring with three in the seventh.

Hops starting pitcher Logan Clayton struggled for the second time this season, allowing three earned runs on four hits over 3.2 innings, but failed to register a strike out while walking five.

Clayton has allowed six earned runs in 4.1 innings thus far this season.

Jorge Minyety got the win for Hillsboro, pitching 2.1 hitless innings while striking out three in relief of Clayton.

April 10: Hillsboro 8, Everett 4

A day removed from a fourth consecutive win, Hillsboro made it five straight with an 8-4 win over Everett on Thursday.

The Hops seized control with all eight of their runs in the third inning and never looked back, led by Cristofer Torin who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, along with one big swing by Angel Ortiz.

After a Ryan Waldschmidt bases loaded single drove in Hillsboro’s first run, Ortiz emptied the bases with a home run to left field, giving the Hops a 5-2 lead, ending Everett starting pitcher William Fleming’s day, and setting the table for what would be the eight-run third.

Meanwhile, Hillsboro starting pitcher Daniel Eagen — despite having given up two runs — was dealing, striking out 10 while walking just one over his 4.1 innings of work.

From there, the Hops bullpen consisting of Eli Saul, Carlos Rey and Luke Craig did what the Hops bullpen has been doing so far this year, limiting the opposition to the tune of a single hit to go with seven strikeouts over the game’s final 4.2 innings.

In addition to Ortiz, Torin and Waldschmidt, Demetrio Crisantes and J.J. D’Orazio finished with two hits apiece.

April 11: Hillsboro 11, Everett 4

Since losing their season opener Hillsboro has gone undefeated, winning their sixth straight when they defeated Everett 11-4 on Friday night.

The Hops scored all they needed by the fourth inning, but added six runs in the eighth inning as an exclamation point to what amounted to another impressive win.

Offensively, Hillsboro had eight players tally hits, five of whom notched more than one.

Ben McLaughlin topped the heap, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored, while Cristofer Torin, Jansel Luis, Druw Jones and Junior Franco had two hits apiece.

The Hops fell behind 1-0 on a Colt Emerson RBI-double in the bottom of the first, but scored four runs of their own in the top of the second and proceeded to plate another in the fourth before breaking things open in the sixth.

Gavin Logan joined Jones, McLaughlin, Franco and Anderdson Rojas with two RBI.

Hillsboro starting pitcher John West impressed on the mound, allowing one earned run on just two hits, while striking out seven and walking one in four innings of work.

April 12: Hillsboro 4, Everett 3

Despite two of their best hitters getting the night off, Hillsboro managed to extend their winning streak to seven with a 4-3 win over on Saturday night.

The Hops got three runs in the fifth inning thanks to a Demetrio Crisantes double followed by an Angel Ortiz double, and got what amounted to the winning run an inning later when Druw Jones scored on a double steal.

Hillsboro starting pitcher Mason Marriott was impressive, going five innings and allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out nine.

Everett scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning on a Milkar Perez RBI single, then pulled to within a run with two runs in the seventh off of Hops reliever Jorge Minyety. But could manage no more over the game’s final two innings as Luke Craig and Philip Abner put the home Sox down in relief.

Hillsboro managed just four hits in the game with Crisantes leading the way, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
