While the weather may not have cooperated, the baseball gods certainly did as the Hops finished their three-game series with Eugene in style, walking-off the Emeralds in the bottom of the ninth to the tune of a 5-4 win on April 6, at Hillsboro Ballpark.
Hillsboro trailed for much of the game before tying it with a Ryan Waldschmidt homer in the seventh inning, then after the Ems took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth, the home Hops again tied it on a Cristofer Torin RBI-double, followed shortly by a wild pitch that plated Torin for the game winner.
The win was the second straight for Hillsboro after dropping their season-opener Friday night.
The Hops were led by Torin, Waldschmidt and Jansel Luis who all tallied two hits and an RBI.
Hillsboro starter Yordin Chalas allowed six hits and three runs in his 2.2 innings of work, but Carlos Rey, Ricardo Yan, Hayden Durke and Luke Craig were impressive in relief, combining to allow one hit and one earned run over the game’s final 6.1 innings.
Eugene starter Esmerlin Vinicio went three innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, while Ems reliever Marques Johnson took the loss, giving up two earned runs in the ninth.
Next, Hillsboro will travel to Everett for six games with the AquaSox starting April 8, then will return home for 12 straight home games with Spokane and Tri-City beginning April 15.
